eBay Business Plan

Selling on eBay and other online auctions can be a fun and profitable business.
The following is an quick overview and instructions on what needs to be done before you can sell on eBay.
You may also want to visit the Online Sales Tax FAQ's page if you have tax related questions or you are in need of tax forms.

Before you can sell on eBay you need to set up a new eBay sellers account. It is required from eBay that you provide either a credit card or active bank so they can bill you monthly for the items that you sell. For more info on the fee structure. See --> fee overview.

The different payment methods that you accept will make a major impact on the maximum amount that customers are willing to pay for your item.
eBay has recently purchased PayPal and they have integrated it into the buying/selling process so it highly recommended that you use PayPal.
Money orders, cashiers checks, personal and business check are also commonly accepted.

Sign up to PayPal here.

It is a really good idea to have a dedicated email address JUST for eBay to keep it separate from your personal mail (and junk mail).
The free internet based Hotmail service is a good choice but if you are going to eventually get a web site of your own you might want to consider getting an "eMail only" web account with an UNLIMITED number of email addresses with
any.com you want from a hosting service like www.homebizhosting.com because later down the line they can just "Upgrade it" to a website package and you can have the same email. It is really affordable ($49.99 year or $28.50 Semi-Annually).

If you plan on do business with REAL wholesalers, you might need to supply a "Sales Tax ID number"..................

This is called different things in different states in the US, but the reason you need it is simple. REAL wholesalers are not going to charge you any tax on the products they ship to your customer. At the end of the year, they have to show the IRS why they did NOT charge you that tax.

Your "Sales Tax ID number" proves that YOU are collecting sales tax on your customers' purchases. The general rule is that you only collect sales tax on the products shipped to addresses in the state where your business resides, but you should check to be sure how this is done in your own state.

The wholesaler keeps a copy of your "Sales Tax ID number" on file, so that they are not liable for the tax on the products shipped to your customers.

Every state has a web site listing information about the tax rules in that state, and where you can obtain your "Sales Tax ID number". You can click on your home state below to go to that site, and get the information you need.

I get a lot of "tax related questions" about selling on eBay so I created a special area that I will keep all the "eBay tax stuff" in.
