eBay Buyers Tips - Buying Without Getting Scammed

Buyers Tips

So you are looking for one of those thingamajigs that you need or just can't live without, but where do you start?
Wal-Mart, Costco, Sears or...... What about eBay? If you follow these basic RULES below you can find some really great deals without getting scammed.

  1. LOOK at the sellers eBay FEEDBACK, and ASK QUESTIONS if you need to. If you get no response or a really slow response this is a good indicator that you will get bad service AFTER the sell of the item. Use eBay's "Seller Information Box" to look for more details about the seller. I personally won't buy from anyone that has less then 99% positive feedback. I will give people a chance because I know that you can please everyone. I have even received a few negatives but I have always tried to fix the problem if it was my fault but in some cases it is just a mistake that can be fixed.

You can also check www.auctionblacklist.com to make sure the seller doesn't have bad complaints against them.

  2. Make sure that you look at the shipping price and take that into consideration when you are bidding on an item. You will have to add that to the final price of the auction.

  3. Use snipe tools to do your bidding at the very END of the auction.
I recommend auction snipping software software from Hammer Tap.

  4. Bid low (known as lowballing) on items that you know have a high value if requirements 1 and 2 are met.

  5. Always pay by credit card only because if there's a problem, you have more leverage to deny payment. Use PayPal services for this. They are very reliable and have good policies supporting buyers.

  6. Use auctions that end during the week or really late at night. That's usually a sign of an inexperienced seller. At the very least, an auction like this will not do as well as one that runs two weekends.

  7. If you can, look for items that don't have Pictures! Statistics say that you'll save 10% on average over items with pictures. Make sure to e-mail the seller an ask very specific questions about the item to determine it's worth to you. If they lie to you, it's evidence to help get your money back.

The following is the sellers legal obligations

  • Federal laws prohibit deceptive or misleading acts in commerce, including Internet auctions. You are required to advertise your product or service and the terms of the sale honestly and accurately.

  • Sellers are prohibited from placing "shill" bids or false testimonials. Some sellers improperly create a fake identity and bid on their own auctions to drive up the offers. Likewise, some sellers place glowing testimonials about themselves in the comment section of Internet auction sites. These practices are not only unethical, they're also fraudulent.

  • Sellers are prohibited from offering illegal goods through Internet auctions. While many auction sites monitor their sites and attempt to delete illegal items, the ultimate responsibility for ensuring that a sale is legal rests with the seller and buyer. Some auction sites post a list of prohibited items as a guide.

  • After the auction closes, sellers are required to ship the merchandise within the time frame designated during the auction or, if no time frame is specified, within 30 days. If you can't meet the shipping commitment, you must give the buyer an opportunity to cancel the order for a full refund or agree to the new shipping date.

The majority of internet auctions are completed without any problems, BUT auction fraud is defiantly on the rise. According to the National Fraud Information Center, online auctions fraud accounts for over 89% of all internet fraud. For more info check out

If you are planning on buying an expensive item on eBay (cars, diamonds, etc...) it is a very good idea to use an Escrow Service.

ONLY USE A TRUSTED ESCROW SERVICE.

There are many escrow scams going on now on eBay.
For more details --> Google Search - escrow scams

eBay only recommends the following escrow services. If the seller wants to use a different one DON'T DO IT!

The 99% Positive Feedback Club

Here are some examples of good sellers.

As you can see by looking at the feedback of the sellers below, you can tell that they care about what they are doing and the service that you are getting. It is easy to tell the bad from the good on eBay. The feedback rating systems seems to be fair and being a BUYER and a SELLER on eBay myself, I feel that it is a good "Judge of Character" for all of us. 1 out of 100 isn't to bad because you have to consider circumstances beyond your control like shipping etc...

That is only a small sample of the great sellers that can be found on eBay.

I am proud to be one of them....

hummm, I'm sure glad I found that
thingamajigs before you did.

If you or a seller you know belongs on this list let me know.
99% or above only.....
